We have all heard of friendly, or not-so-friendly, sports team rivalries between roommates, but Katelyn Tulp and Meghan Tighe, class of 09', quarrel over Spanish versus French. Katelyn is a Psychology and French double major who spent last year in Dijon, France. Meghan often teases her for "laughing like a French man." Katelyn laughs off Meg's impersonation, which she finds entirely inaccurate. Meghan was also abroad last year, living in Leon, Spain.

The girls are both experiencing difficulty readjusting to an English-speaking culture. They appreciate the fact that they can finish each others' sentences because occasionally they have trouble finishing their own. "Sometimes we have to search for words," Katelyn says. "We help each other out with English vocabulary and grammar." Between the roommates, they know five languages and have visited at least twelve different countries.

The roommates collaborate in other ways as well. Meg, a co-chair of Eco-action and an environmental studies concentrator, has a passion for protecting the environment (green power-vote stickers and fliers are scattered throughout the room). Katelyn used her powers as an RA to launch a recycling initiative on their floor. The girls are proud that all the rooms on their hall now use recycling bins.

Much of the girls' room was inspired by the desire to bring a bit of Europe back to Worcester. On the bulletin board outside the door, there is a photo of the roommates in Vienna, standing in front of the gazebo from The Sound of Music. The musical geek in me was extremely excited. The focal point of the room is a bistro table with matching chairs, reminiscent of French cafés. The girls have coffee and breakfast at the table in the mornings. It is much more comfortable and convenient than Kimball before an 8 a.m. class. The table sits right under a window, and the view is one of the best I have seen from a hill dorm.

Meg's favorite thing about the room is the light that comes in from both sides; Lehy 410 is one of those ever sought-after corner rooms. Katelyn loves that the bistro table has a perfect view of the sunset.

They both love "the corner" between their two windows where they have created a homey seating area. It includes a comfy chair and ottoman, a house plant named Alphonse, a television, a refrigerator showcasing some personal mementos, and the bistro table. It is framed by a set of floor length curtains.

Much to my delight, the room also showcases glow- in-the-dark stars. Meg is proud that she has hung on to a decorative fashion that many foolishly discarded after grade school. Another unique characteristic of Lehy 410 is its single closet, a testament to Katelyn and Meg's friendship. "How many girls on this campus could share a closet and still get along?" Meghan wonders.
