Entering the weekend at an even 1-1-1, the Holy Cross Men's Hockey team looked to break the balanced record as they headed to Rochester, NY for a two game series. Unfortunately, the weekend road trip wouldn't pan out the way they had hoped it would, as the Crusaders dropped both games to the Tigers of RIT.
RIT, who was picked in the pre-season polls to finish third in the Atlantic Hockey Association this season, entered the weekend at 1-3-1. But on Friday night, they would set a tone that would carry over through the next evening. The Tigers would outshoot the Crusaders in the first period 10-6, netting two power play goals for a 2-0 lead heading into the second period. The Crusader offense would strike back over the next two periods, outshooting RIT 12-9 in the second period and 12-6 in the third, but would only come away with one goal when, in the second period, junior forward Rob Forshner netted the lone goal for Holy Cross. Junior captain Brodie Sheahan and sophomore forward Jordan Cyr would both get assists on the goal. RIT's 3 goals over the final two periods would seal a victory for the Tigers, 5-1. For Holy Cross, sophomore goalie Adam Roy stopped 20 shots while RIT's Louis Menard saved 29.
Unfortunately, Holy Cross wouldn't catch a break on Saturday night either. Rochester's Brennan Sarazin's first of two goals on the night would put the Crusaders in a hole at the end of the first period. As the second period progressed, however, the hole would only get deeper as RIT notched two more unanswered goals by Steve Matic and Sean Murphy. Down 3-0, a former NEPSAC trio would help HC bounce back when freshman Mike Daly stuck the puck in the back of the net off passes from sophomore Mark Znutas and junior captain Ryan Driscoll. With the score at 3-1, the Tigers and Saders would split goals in the third period as regulation ended at 5-1, sealing a sweep for RIT over Holy Cross in the two-game series. For the Crusaders, junior goalie Ian Dams made 31 saves and is 0-1-0 on the season, while Jared DeMichiel stopped 21 shots, improving to 2-2-0.
The men's hockey team will look to bounce back on Friday and Saturday, when they return to action at the Hart Center against a winless Mercyhurst.
