Coming off an impressive 1-0 victory over then 19th-ranked Boston College, the Holy Cross men's soccer team returned to Patriot League play on Saturday evening, hosting Army. The Crusaders needed a victory over the Black Knights in order to keep pace with co-Patriot League leader Colgate. Also, a victory would give the Crusaders a birth in the Patriot League tournament.
Sophomore forward Kyle Miller broke the game open early with two goals in the first ten minutes. The first came in the fourth minute of the match when Miller fired a shot into the right side of the net to give the Crusaders an early one-goal advantage.
Just five minutes later, in the ninth minute, Miller connected on a cross from freshman midfielder Jordan Michael. Michael hit a pass from the left side of the box to Miller, who sent the ball into the right corner of the net, giving the Crusaders an early 2-0 lead.
Both teams went scoreless for the remainder of the first half. The Black Knights began the second half with a vengeance. Less than a minute into the half forward Cole Dietz made a run to the right side of the box and crossed the ball to Peter Campbell, who chipped it into the upper right corner of the net, reducing Holy Cross's lead to just one goal. But that was as close as the Black Knights would get.
Holy Cross' defense responded by shutting down the Army attack for the remainder of the match. The offense followed suit, sealing the match in the 87th minute. Sophomore midfielder Jon Werth sent a pass into the 18-yard box to senior midfielder Andreas Andrews who shot the ball past Army goalkeeper John Michael Gallogly.
With the 3-1 victory, Holy Cross men's soccer team improved its record to 9-4-3 (4-1-1 Patriot League) earning them a spot in the Patriot League tournament. With one match left, Holy Cross is tied at the top of the Patriot League standings with Colgate at 4-1-1.
The match will take place this upcoming Saturday, November 8th in Easton, PA against Lafayette. With a victory the Crusaders would improve their chances of earning home-field advantage in the Patriot League tournament.
